We love Football around Christmas time; it’s the time of the year where things start heating up with random juicy fixtures on most nights. The big winners at the top this weekend were Arsenal, Chelsea and City who now make up the top 3 in the Premier League and we wouldn’t be surprised if it was these three in those positions at the end of the campaign. Elsewhere Hull City/Tigers/All stars were the outstanding team, defeating Liverpool 3-1 at the KC Stadium on Sunday. Perhaps un-surprisingly players from these 4 teams heavily feature in our team of the weekend for week 13:
GK – Wojciech Szczesny: Not only has he got one of the hardest names to spell in World Football, but more importantly has been much, much improved so far this season. He didn’t have a great deal to do against Cardiff, but his one-handed save for the Gunners when they were 1-0 up proved to be crucial.
RB – Seamus Coleman: When Everton signed Coleman for 80k a few years back, we doubt many would believe he would go on to become one of the best right backs in the division, but that’s exactly what he’s done this season. Martinez has given his full backs license to get forward so far this campaign and Coleman has excelled in this role. Although his finish was a bit lucky, we’re taking nothing away from his very impressive overall performance.
CB – Curtis Davies: It’s no secret that we are big fans of Curtis Davies here at FootballDons. With another man of the match performance on Sunday, surely the no-nonsense centre half is an outside bet for the England squad?
CB – John Terry: Captain. Leader. Legend. You can now add all time Premier League scoring defender to that list. It’s funny that the all time Premier League scoring defender and the all time Premier League scoring midfielder both play for a so called ‘small-club’ in north London with supposedly no history…
LB – Bryan Oviedo: Another Everton full back makes it into our team. Ovideo, like Coleman, had a field day against Stoke on Saturday, contributing with an assist and a goal, as well as helping his side to another clean sheet. Who needs Baines?
RM – Gerard Deulofeu: The third Everton play in our team is the on loan Barcelona youngster, Deulofeu (yes we had to Google his name for spelling). The pacey winger tore Stoke’s flimsey defence to shreds on Saturday, playing a part in each of the goals Everton scored. If Martinez can keep everyone fit, Everton have a good chance of a place in Europe this year.
CM – Aaron Ramsey: We never thought at the start of the season that by week 13 we would be running out of superlatives for Aaron Ramsey. Quite simply he has been sensational this year and the Player of the year so far by some way. Cardiff fans reaction to him not celebrating was class as well. The whole thing in general just made us make noises we don’t normally make in public. FootballDons Don of the week.
CM – Sandro: When you score a thunderbastard like that, you have to be in the team.
LM – Samir Nasri: Nasri has looked a completely different player this season for Manchester City, becoming the player they hoped they had brought from Arsenal a couple of seasons back. He chipped in with a couple and could easily have had a hat-trick late on. Such is the quality of his performances, City have hardly missed David Silva.
CAM – Mesut Ozil: Ozil now has 7 assists so far in the league, more than any other player. He just makes playing Football look so easy. He glides round the pitch like a Henrys Hoover and some of the interplay between Arsenals midfield makes us giddy.
STR – Wayne Rooney: We wonder if some Utd fans still want to see Rooney sold? Because without him this year, they would be in a lot of trouble. His goals weren’t classics by any means, but a goals a goal at the end of the day.
