Sacking Season and Christmas Football

Firstly, we’d like to apologise for the mini Pre Christmas break we gave ourselves. We felt we earned it, and you missed. But now we’re back…but Steve Clarke and AVB have gone.

Sacking Season

If normal employees got sacked as much as Football Managers do, other employers would question that and never look to employ them in the future. So why is it so different in Football? Terms like ‘it’s a results business’, and ‘left by mutual consent’ are almost bullshit when talking about managers being sacked. FootballDons feel both the sackings were slightly unfair and we will try and explain why.

Steve Clarke

We know when you look at the hard facts it’s Only one win in the past 10 games, nine in the past 41 and just 31 points from the last 34 Premier League matches. That’s relegation form. So in that sense you may agree, but we feel Steve is an honest bloke and has brought stability to a club that a few years ago would have been considered a ‘yo-yo’ team. They have a good squad and even this season seem to have the players to keep them up and in mid table. We thought Clarke would have been the guy to do this for them this season.

Maybe West Brom didn’t show the potential and good football they can play enough, but when they did they were very good. Strong games against Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea shouldn’t be overlooked however, over the last few weeks they have lost a lead to Villa and lost to Norwich and Cardiff. Games they would be expected to do better in. The successor to Clarke will need to be someone that can take them to the next level and not let them slip back into the club they were a few years ago.

A sacking we didn’t really want to see due to us thinking Spurs have good potential this season, but have recently flopped a bit. We thought AVB was a good fit for Spurs, he just needed to change his ways and use his players in a different way as discussed in a previous blog. Players need to be utilised in a way that’s for the good of the team. Currently they are playing a system that AVB is used to, but is not getting the best out of their players. This we feel was probably the downfall to his sacking.

What they need going forward is probably a top manager. Someone that has the ambition and drive to get them into the Top 4 and to maintain it. Top 4 is still possible for them this season with some random form slips from some of the big teams, they just need to sort themselves out as quickly as possible and kick on. Glenn Hoddle taking over is a completely different debate.

Christmas Football

Oh how we love the Football Festivities over Christmas. For us it all kicks off this weekend. Wet your lips with some alcohol, place yourself at home with a beverage or in a pub and enjoy what the Premier League throws up for you. You may as well get started on the Quality Street as well, handful of nuts and first goalscorer bets all round. Some of the decent fixtures we wanted to point out are:

22 Dec 13:30
Southampton
v
Tottenham
22 Dec 16:00
Swansea
v
Everton
23 Dec 20:00
Arsenal
v
Chelsea
26 Dec 17:30
Man City
        v

Naughty aren’t they? Not only that, they’re split up by literally a few days. Food, alcohol and Football. The joys!
